But the reality is that they probably couldn't have moved first - they needed that huge investment and parking and living spaces and sense of safety to already be there to be viable. If only those groups would have moved first to develop those bars, then there would not have been conflicting uses. ![]() I feel sorry for them - they undoubtably made the largest investment in the area (up until the new things hopefully going in now), but their vision was shouted down by the properties to the south and the demand for that kind of thing won out. I'm not sure what Crockett Row was supposed to do in the situation - parking became an all-out war. Over time, the influence of those bars attracting a much younger and rowdier crowd combined with the parking issues made going to those Crockett Row nicer places more and more of a hassle, and as more alternative areas developed, it just became easier to leave that area to the young people who enjoy their style of entertainment district. Those Crocket Row restaurant patrons found it more and more difficult to park, and there were stages of reactionary behavior that made the parking policies more and more strict, making no one happy. Over time, the light industrial properties to the south were transforming into bars, but did not have the land or the financial might to care about parking, and so their patrons were mooching off of the free parking in Crocket Row. Parking was not a problem in those days: it was easy to pull into the lower levels of either garage. I will not remember the litany of places that came and then went, but Brownstone, Tillmans, Fireside Pies, Water's was even there first, there were quite a few decent places to eat. It was a little slow to lease, but had nice restaurants coming in and some retail. Just recalling my own experiences with the area when it opened, here are my thoughts:Ĭrockett Row developers spent a lot of money transforming that area from what it was into a place that I wanted to go to.
